Dr Mahathir Muhammad reflects on the death of Henry Kissinger.
----
This clip is part of our latest episode with the former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad

After former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's recent death, the world is compelled to scrutinize the dark aspects of his legacy. As Nixon's national security advisor, Kissinger was not only known for his so-called "ultra-realist" approach to international politics but also for orchestrating policies with catastrophic consequences. While he is credited with the strategic pivot toward China, his methods included the ruthless carpet bombing of Laos and Cambodia, a failed strategy to gain concessions from North Vietnam that resulted in immense human suffering. The video critically examines Kissinger's dubious contributions, highlighting the moral compromises made in the pursuit of geopolitical objectives. The parallels drawn between historical events and the ongoing situation in Gaza shed light on a disturbing pattern of Western powers turning a blind eye to human rights abuses, raising pertinent questions about the ethics of Kissinger's foreign policy and its enduring impact on global geopolitics. Join us as we engage with Dr Mahathir Mohamad to delve deeper into this critical analysis, exploring the consequences of Kissinger's actions and their implications for the world today.

Freedom of speech is an idea we all naturally gravitate towards. Who would want to live in a society where certain types of speech were outlawed or regulated? Or where we had to watch what we say at every turn. Yet liberals would readily admit that free speech is not absolute and they have recognised the need to police and censure some speech that could undermine the virtues they want society to embrace. It is not uncommon to find within western societies libel laws, the censure of the press and moral boundaries that all contribute to the narrowing of speech, whether through law or through society.

Recently, freedom of speech has been subject to intense debate. Here in Britain, a freedom warrior Toby Young has established a free speech union that rails against the shutdown of opinions in society and specifically university campuses. He and others like him on both sides of the Atlantic believe progressivism has ignited a new puritan assault on freedom, ready to ban speakers on campus and take offence. What they call a new ‘cancel culture’ has narrowed discussion at the detriment progress. Certainly, modern liberal societies are plagued with these culture wars that are likely to intensify in years to come.

But of course, Muslims also have a conundrum when it comes to free speech. On the one hand, we suffer from the constant barrage of abuse that comes our way - the repulsive cartoons against the Prophet (saw) were disguised with the caveat that we are the problem, and we must learn to tolerate others. But on the other hand, we also see our own speech curtailed in our masjids and communities and we often call upon the wider society to respect our freedoms. So how do we understand this idea and where does Islam stand on free speech?

To understand this subject further, I have invited Hamza Tzortzis to the Thinking Muslim to break down the idea and to give us an Islamic perspective. Hamza Andreas Tzortzis is the author of The Divine Reality: God, Islam & The Mirage of Atheism. He is a public speaker, instructor and essayist and a founding member of the Sapience Institute.

My conversation with Hamza is extensive and we cover a lot of ground, we ended up speaking for over two hours and it was a real ordeal editing this down as his words are rich with content.

** This interview was recorded a few hours before South Africa initiated its ICJ case - the Genocide Convention is discussed in detail here.

When we consider the disgraceful actions of the Israeli state, it becomes evident that they operate in a system of impunity. From the very early days of this slaughter, the diplomatic, economic and military cover provided by the West has unleashed a genocidal war machine intent on ethnically cleansing Gaza and removing its indigenous people, the Palestinians, from their ancestral home. In an act of perverse precision, the Israeli war machine decimated Gaza’s archival buildings – as a symbol of its desire to erase Palestinian history.

But what, if anything, can we do about this? My guest today, Tayab Ali, is a lawyer specialising in criminal trials. He is a partner at the legal firm Bindmans. He has been described as “an irresistible force – he’s fearless.” He is rated as a Super Lawyer by Thompson Reuters and recognised in Civil Liberties by The Legal 500. He has represented clients in the Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights and at international political and legal institutions, including the United Nations, the International Criminal Court and the African Commission of Human and Peoples’ Rights.

There has been an uptick in the number of people converting to Islam recently. This was very noticeable in Ramadan, when it just seemed every day, a young man was becoming Muslim. Imam Ashraf, who leads a congregation in the inner-city London borough of Lewisham, discusses why so many British youngsters are turning to Islam. His Mosque saw over 60 conversions in Ramadan alone. I ask him about the influence of Andrew Tate upon many young men coming to Islam.

Imam Ashraf Dabous is an imam at Lewisham Mosque in London. He studied at the Islamic University of Madinah. He also studied privately under various Shuyukh – studying Hanbali and Hanafi Fiqh and other Sciences. And he recently graduated from Goldsmiths University with an MSc in CBT therapy and is a qualified councillor.

When we consider the stance of the West over Israel’s actions these past weeks, many point out the blatant hypocrisy in applying their standards. We are constantly told that human rights are inviolable, that freedom of speech is sacrosanct, and that people have the right to self-determination. Westerners sermonise about how Muslims should embrace democratic norms. They pontificate about the rules-based liberal world order, where rules are applied fairly and equally. Yet, in these past weeks, anyone with a conscience would note that these calls ring hollow. We all can see this hypocrisy. But are the West negligent of their ideals? Are they acting in contrary to their liberal values. It is said if only they were brought to the right path once again.

Imam Tom Facchine argues the West is acting perfectly in line with their worldviews. Imam Tom Facchine finished his BA in Political Science and was granted the opportunity to study at the Islamic University of Madinah from 2015-2020, where he obtained his BA from the Faculty of Shariah. Imam Tom is the Research Director of Islam and Society at the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research. He is also a resident scholar and imam of Utica Masjid (New York state).

We are all angry. We live in an unjust world. The so-called rules-based system, the rhetoric surrounding human rights, the endless speeches on democracy and freedom – all of it turned out to be hollow. The death and destruction in gaza is juxtaposed with the triviality with which the political elites in the west talk of human life. We are angry.
How does a Muslim deal with this visceral anger. How do we deal with the inhumanity of these western elites yet stay true to ourselves and who we are? Should we learn to stop being angry and live our lives in a comatose state or utilise this anger in a just direction?

Today we have Dr Kamal Abu Zahra to help us understand anger from an Islamic perspective.
My guest today is Dr Kamal Abu Zahra is a lecturer in Islamic studies and in Islamic law who has an expertise in the contemporary fiqh.

With the US mid-term elections looming, once again Muslims in the United States confront a now perennial problem, to whom should they cast their vote? Liberals promise to fight discrimination and advance minority rights, attractive to young Muslims in particular whilst the right look to capitalise on the culture wars by addressing some of the so-called wedge issues that provoke conservative America, including liberal abortion laws, the trans issue and the liberalisation of education.

It is within this context that I held a very interesting conversation with my guest today, public intellectual and activist Mobeen Vaid. Mobeen has been at the forefront of addressing the creeping liberalisation of social attitudes of the Muslim community and how these opinions often are way out of sync with the global Muslim ummah and Islam. Mobeen’s erudite commentary has looked to counter and critique these trends and today he lectures at Mosques and community centres across the US.

I ask him to attempt to explain to an outsider like myself why many Muslims worry about the intellectual and social health of American Muslims and whether these perceptions are warranted. I also ask him to situate his own work within the context of these culture wars, how can he criticise the excesses of social liberalism without becoming fodder for an equally disturbing conservative right?

I have to note, Mobeen has moved the conversation in a positive direction in America and I suspect many Islamic scholars, who have been reticent to talk about these trends, have been influenced by his straightforward yet well-researched opinions. In that sense, I see him as a thought leader. As always some of our listeners may find some of what is said today challenging, but let’s keep the conversation going.
