This fascinating interview with Dr Sohail Hanif looks to uncover the secrets of Ramadan. What should the month indeed mean to believers? And what should we be striving to achieve this month? How should we treat its minutes and hours? And how do we know whether, as the hadith suggests, we have lost its blessings or gained success out of it?
Dr Sohail is the Chief Executive of the National Zakat Foundation. He previously held the position of BA Manager and Lecturer at Cambridge Muslim College and has also held the position of Head of Sciences at Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman. He studied extensively with traditional scholars and holds a PhD from Oxford University. His PhD thesis, which explores Islamic legal epistemology, won the 2019 prize of the British Association for Islamic Studies. He has lectured widely on Islamic law and Qur’anic studies in academic, public and traditional settings.

India’s 200 million Muslims are at the mercy of an ultra-nationalist government that looks to create an exclusively Hindu Bharat or homeland. Since the rise of the BJP government, led by Narendra Modi, Muslims have been subject to discrimination, alienation, daily religious abuse, economic marginalisation, state-sanctioned mob violence and pogroms like in Gujarat in 2002. This Hindu nationalism is underpinned by a pernicious cultural and political ideology, Hindutva, framed by an antagonism towards Islam and a rewriting of Indian history.
Our guest this week Professor Irfan Ahmad, helps us understand the precarious state of India’s Muslims and the Hindutva ideology. Born in India, he now lives in Istanbul, where he is a professor of sociology and anthropology at Ibn Haldun University. Prior to istanbul he was research professor in Germany at Max Plank institute and he has taught anthropology and politics in the Netherlands and Australia He has written numerous books and articles on India and Islam and recently published a provocative piece on Hindu Orientalism.
His essay on Hindu Orientalism can be accessed here: https://www.tandfonline.com/do....i/abs/10.1080/135693

The recent atrocity at al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan underscores the brutality of Israel’s settler colonial project. Our guest this week, Palestinian and Islamic activist Dr Azzam Tamimi gave us a background to the apartheid policies of the state and explained why he believes, ultimately, the severity of Israel’s brutality only serves to express its sheer failure as a project.
Azzam Tamimi is a British Palestinian academic and political activist. He is currently the Chairman of Alhiwar TV Channel and is its Editor in Chief. He is a prolific writer and public speaker.

Yasir Qadhi explains the meaning behind the most talked about verse in the Qur'an in books of tafseer (Qur'anic exegesis). This verse is:
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. (Quran 24:35)

As the Israeli war machine is in full motion, the position of the West lays bare the hollowness of its claims to observe international law. With every US-manufactured bomb dropped on Gaza, the vacuousness of its liberal world order is exposed to Muslims and the world. Yet what can we do about this situation? Lately, many governments have queued up to sign the so-called Abraham Accords with the apartheid state, and it has been concluded that the Arabs no longer care for the Palestinian cause. Today, we get a real feel for the ‘Arab street’ and what Palestine means to Muslims in the region.
Our guest thisepisode is Dr. Tareq Suwaidan. He is the CEO and owner of Gulf Innovation Group in Kuwait and was the General Manager of Al-Resalah Satellite TV - ranked among the highest in the Middle East.He holds a PhD from the University of Oklahoma and lived in the United States for 20 years.Dr. Tareq Suwaidan is recognised as one of the most popular Islamic speakers in the Arab world and was named among the 500 Most Influential Muslims in 2022. Dr. Suwaidan authored more than 100 books on Islam and history. He uses the seerah as a source for leadership and strategic skills. He has trained more than 100,000 students in Management & Leadership skills, established 5 American and Canadian schools, and boasts over 18 million followers on social media.

Want the slides for the story of Prophet Adam? Download them here: https://thethinkingmuslim.com/....2020/05/02/story-of-
**How This Story Came to Be**
My daughter’s around that age now (3.5 years) where we can start introducing religious conepts. There is nothing good out there for 3-4 year olds to introduce religion to them. Most good stuff is geared towards 7+ years.
So I decided to do my own book for her age using Google Slides. I’ve read enough non-religious books to her for her level to understand how to write one for myself. I know what vocabulary and sentence structures she recognizes. I’m starting with the Story of Adam to introduce Allah as the Creator of everything and connect it to the story of Adam and then us.
The key thing is to turn it into a dialogue so every slide comes with a question that the reader asks the child to remphasize a concept in the discussion before moving to the next slide. I used a book written for older kids as a template. I’m basically dumbing it down for 3-4 year olds. For catchy pictures, I used Google images to find cartoon images related to the discussion in each slide.
I’ve been reading it to my daughter for the past few days and she really likes it! So I guess it is a success alhamdulillah! Now, I am sharing it here for other parents who may be interested as well. A few suggestions before giving you the download link (it’s free!):
I wrote this story with my 3.5 yrs old in mind. Your kid(s) might be at a higher/lower level. You can either run it as a powerpoint presentation directly from the link (preferred) or download it as a pdf and get it printed. If you want to customize it yourself and gear it more towards your own child’s needs, if my version is not doing it for your kid, then you can download it as a powerpoint presentation and just edit it yourself using Microsoft powerpoint. You know your kids better anyone else. Think about how you can retell the story in a way so that your kid(s) will get the themes presented. (If you run it directly from the site, it flips screens which is a cool feature that my kid loves and kind of brings the story to life.)
Under every slide, I have a section called “Question”. This is for you, the parent, to discuss each slide with your kid before moving to the next one. The point of this dialogue is to re-emphasize the message in their mind and make sure they understand the story. Don’t spend too long on it otherwise your kid(s) might get bored and frustrated. Just move them along the story as best you can while having a short dialogue with them about the theme(s) being discussed in every slide.
You don’t have to pose the questions the way I did. You can customize it in whatever way suits your kid(s) needs. Some of this is trial and error. Just try it and if it works, then great, otherwise, try some other way to ask it.
Ideally, I am trying to do this story with my kid at most once a day and at least once a week. My goal is to go over it with her enough times so that she can retell it in her own words. When the picture from any of the slides come up, she should be able to summarize that section for me the best she can at her level. Even if she doesn’t get all of it but she should be able to get the gist of it. This is just my own way to measure how well she is succeeding in understanding the story, you can do your own way.
Finally, please provide me some feedback after and how it went. I’d love to make more resources for parents to bring their kids closer to the deen insha’Allah if this one is received well.

If you want to see a film that simultaneously depicts the horrors of man’s excessive barbarism but also the indominable spirit of human resilience, you have to watch The Mauritanian. Set in the legally dubious post-9/11 world, it tells the gripping story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi and his rendition to the infamous ex-Soviet airbase, Bagram in Afghanistan and then Guantanamo Bey. Slahi was falsely accused of links to Al-Qaeda and without recourse to due process, international treaties and conventions and the so-called cherished principles of the US constitution, he ended up spending 14 long years in Camp X-ray. Yet the power of the human spirit and his Islamic convictions prevailed and he returned to his home country of Mauritania, exonerated of any wrongdoing.
But the film left many unanswered questions. We invited Moazzam Begg from the campaigning group Cage UK, also a former Guantanamo prisoner, to talk about the film, his relationship with Slahi and to put into context the geopolitical and legal issues that led to what some describe as a scar on American democracy.
