In this lesson, you will learn about organic compounds in chemistry and how to visualize and name them. We will discuss what an organic molecule is, and how long chains of organic substances can be named. We will learn about alkanes form single bonds and alkenes form double bonds. We will discuss the prefixes to name hydrocarbon alkane chains, and we will use physical ball and stick models along with computer graphics to visualize how these organic molecules look in 3d space..
In this example, we solve for the final temperature when a hot metal is added to cold water.
A 15 g block of aluminum metal originally at 98 degrees Celsius is dropped into 55 g of water originally at 25 degrees Celsius. If the specific heat of water and aluminum are 4.18 J/(g C) and 0.903 J/(g C), respectively, calculate the final temperature of the metal and water.
Be sure to use this very helpful trick to help find the hybridization of an atom in a compound.
Please leave any comments, questions and suggestions below. Thanks for watching!
In this example, we calculate the wavelength corresponding to the threshold frequency.
The minimum energy required to eject electrons from a certain metal is 235 kJ/mol. Find the longest wavelength in nm of electromagnetic radiation that can eject an electron.
Learning Objective: Learn to name molecular compounds
Topics: nomenclature, binary molecular compounds, prefixes
In this example problem, we draw the Lewis structure for HCN, which has a triple bond.

Notes:
The chemistry for a salt water pool is slightly different from a normal pool. Since the salt system is generating chlorine constantly the Sanitizer level is very stable. You will rarely need to shock a salt pool.
The chlorine level will be high also since it is constantly generating it, but it is safe at a high level. The pH will also drift high since the Hydrogen gas the cell produces leaves the water, the remaining Hydroxide will raise the Ph.

Models are great, except they're also usually inaccurate. In this episode of Crash Course Chemistry, Hank discusses why we need models in the world and how we can learn from them... even when they're almost completely wrong. Plus, Lewis Structures!
