A distinguished political scientist, Tim Groseclose is the Marvin Hoffenberg Professor of American Politics at the University of California at Los Angeles. Professor Groseclose has also taught at Caltech, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Ohio State University and Harvard. His new book is Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind.

For years, conservatives have been saying, "The media are biased." For just as many years, liberals have been saying, "Oh, yeah? Prove it." Now Tim Groseclose has proven it. Drawing on years of research and statistical analysis laid out in Left Turn, Groseclose explains how he measures the political leanings of ordinary Americans, the level of bias in any chosen media company, and how this media bias powerfully affects elections. He concludes by offering ways of combating media bias and explaining the role the Internet plays in exposing this bias.

Journalism needs to be fact-based, without gossip, without opinion. So how do you find it? How do you know if what you're watching or reading is reliable journalism? Media bias charts can be a great tool in helping you differentiate between what's trustworthy and what isn't.

In this video I go over arguably the two most popular media bias charts and whether or not they can be trusted, doing a short dive into how they rate their news sources and their methodology.

So today we're going to look at the rather thorny issue of the media and its role in politics. Wether you're talking about older forms of media like newspapers and radio or newer forms like television and the Internet, all media serves the same purpose - to provide information to the public. So we're going to discuss their strengths and weaknesses and examine how both content creators and consumers play a role in the information that is told. It could be argued that because the media only relays information it isn't actually important to the American political system, but when you look more closely at what and how this information affects voters as well as their elected officials, we can more clearly see its importance as a political institution.

The Media Research Centre has found that since Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race, the reporting from major media outlets has been overwhelmingly positive for Kamala Harris and majorly negative for Donald Trump.

The media watchdog reported that Ms Harris has received 66 per cent more airtime than former US president Donald Trump, despite not doing any media interviews.

It also reported that the coverage of the Vice President has been positive 84 per cent of the time, while Mr Trump’s coverage has been “nearly entirely hostile” 89 per cent of the time.

Sky News host Liz Storer has called out the bias from ABC’s debate moderators during US Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump’s presidential debate.

The clash of candidates on Wednesday marked their first-ever encounter, and possibly their last, before the November presidential election.

"Kamala ... didn't get a single fact check, unlike the fact checker that never led up on Trump and going viral now is the fact checks on his fact checks, which turn out to be absolute lies," Ms Storer said.

"But the takeaway from this is nothing has changed. Everyone who is voting Democrat still sees Kamala as, oh, she eviscerated Trump. All the Republicans or those voting Republican just saw a three-on-one in which Trump did remarkably well, holding on to his own."

Fox news is one of the biggest news channels in America, with the majority of Americans connected to it via basic cable. It presents what it regards, as unbiased and wholesome coverage of world news. However, many argue that the channel promotes Conservative political positions, and is associated with the Republican Party. In fact some have argued, that it is the “PR extension of the Republican Party”

In 2009 now President Barrack Obama refused to take part in an interview with fox news presenters. This was because they were seen as presenting biased coverage in reports of Obama’s Universal Health care proposal. Fox has also been accused of misrepresenting facts, by over emphasising the amount of people that appear at Republican events, and cropping the quotes of Democrats like Obama, Al Gore, and John Kerry.

Some argue that Fox news’s bias is caused by their owner Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch is a media mogul and has many news outlets all over the world; he is also coincidently affiliated with the Conservative Party in the UK Whatever the case, Fox news continues to underline their motto “Fair and Balanced” and continue to argue against the accusations of bias levied at them.

How news feed algorithms supercharge confirmation bias
New videos DAILY: https://bigth.ink
Join Big Think Edge for exclusive video lessons from top thinkers and doers: https://bigth.ink/Edge
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to a Pew Research poll, 45% of U.S. adults get at least some of their news from Facebook, with half of that amount using Facebook as their only news outlet. Algorithms on social media pick what people read. There's worry that social media algorithms are creating filter bubbles, so that they never have to read something they don't agree with and thus cause tribal thinking and confirmation bias. The Charles Koch Foundation is committed to understanding what drives intolerance and the best ways to cure it. The foundation supports interdisciplinary research to overcome intolerance, new models for peaceful interactions, and experiments that can heal fractured communities. For more information, visit charleskochfoundation.org/courageous-collaborations.The opinions expressed in this video do not necessarily reflect the views of the Charles Koch Foundation, which encourages the expression of diverse viewpoints within a culture of civil discourse and mutual respect.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ELI PARISER:

Eli Pariser has dedicated his career to figuring out how technology can elevate important topics in the world. He is the co-founder of Upworthy and bestselling author of The Filter Bubble: What the Internet Is Hiding from You.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:

ELI PARISER: A filter bubble is your own personal universe of information that's been generated by algorithms that are trying to guess what you're interested in. And increasingly online we live in these bubbles. They follow us around. They form part of the fabric of most websites that we visit and I think we're starting to see how they're creating some challenges for democracy.

We've always chosen media that conforms to our address and read newspapers or magazines that in some way reflect what we're interested in and who we want to be. But the age of kind of the algorithmically mediated media is really different in a couple of ways. One way is it's not something that we know that we're choosing. So we don't know on what basis, who an algorithm thinks we are and therefore we don't know how it's deciding what to show us or not show us. And it's often that not showing us part that's the most important – we don't know what piece of the picture we're missing because by definition it's out of view. And so that's increasingly I think part of what we're seeing online is that it's getting harder and harder even to imagine how someone else might come to the views that they have might see the world the way they do. Because that information is literally not part of what we're seeing or consuming. Another feature of kind of the filter bubble landscape is that it's automatic and it's not something that we're choosing. When you pick up a left wing magazine or a right wing magazine we know what the bias is, what to expect.

A deeper problem with algorithms choosing what we see and what we don't see is that the data that they have to base those decisions on is really not representative of the whole of who we are as human beings. So Facebook is basically trying to take a handful of sort of decisions about what to click on and what not to click on, maybe how much time we spend with different things and trying to extract from that some general truth about what we're interested in or what we care about. And that clicking self who in fractions of a second is trying to decide am I interested in this article or am I not it just isn't a very full representation of the whole of our human self. You can do this experiment where you can look back at your web history for the last month and obviously there are going to be some things there that really gave you a lot of value, that represent your true self or your innermost self. But there's a lot of stuff, you know, I click on cell phone reviews even though I'll always have an iPhone. I never am not going to have an iPhone. But it's just some kind of compulsion that I have. And I don't particularly need or want algorithms amping up my desire to read useless technology reviews.

The people who create these algorithms like to say like they're neutral. We don't want to create a kind of take an editorial point of view. And I think there's something to that that's important, you know. We don't want Mark Zuckerberg to impose his political views on all of us and I don't think he is. But it's also kind of a weird dodge because every time that you create a list and that's essentially all that Faceboo...

(11 Dec 2017) White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders argues with reporters during the White House briefing Monday over what she described as honest media mistakes versus "purposefully misleading the American people."
Sanders said the morning rush-hour attack in New York's subway underscored "the need for immigration reforms."
Authorities have identified the attacker as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah. Law enforcement officials say he came to the U.S. from Bangladesh seven years ago with a type of preferential visa for people with relatives who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
The White House also is pushing back on sexual misconduct allegations against President Donald Trump, saying he has already denied them.
Three women who previously accused Trump of sexual harassment shared their stories Monday on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today." They're calling for a congressional investigation.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Trump "has addressed these accusations directly and denied all of these allegations."
She says the people decided in November to elect him regardless.
Jessica Leeds, Samantha Holvey and Rachel Crooks are among the women who have alleged harassment by Trump.
The White House has called the claims false and "totally disputed in most cases."
The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations has said the women should be heard.

It's not news that the UK media applies double standards in its reporting, but some of the latest shameless angles and even objective lies means that press reform is not only in Labour's interests, but the case for it being urgent is strong.
