Fake news does not only disrupt society but also economy and the deep roots of democracy. Sometimes, their impact can even be measured in terms of people killed by the misinformation that it’s spread around.
Sinan Aral, a scientist, entrepreneur and investor with a PhD in IT economics, applied econometrics and statistics, has run some of the largest randomised experiments in digital social networks like Facebook and Twitter to measure the impact of persuasive messages and peer influence on our economy, our society and our public health.
Having conducted the most extensive longitudinal study of false news spread on Twitter, which was published on the cover of Science this March, Aral has proven that false news diffuses farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth online. But why? The answer will leave you astonished as the main cause for such an effective spread of false news is not bots, it’s…us. So, how can we be sure that something is real? As well as teaching at MIT as a Professor of IT & Marketing, Professor in the Institute for Data, Systems and Society, Aral is currently a founding partner at Manifest Capital and on the Advisory Boards of the Alan Turing Institute, the British National Institute for Data Science, in London and C6 Bank, the first all-digital bank of Brazil, in Sao Paulo. In this era of incredible news stories, how do we know which ones are true? Hannah’s talk explains how the usual method of vetting news stories no longer applies in this unprecedented period. In this humorous talk, this fourteen year old offers a new method that helps authenticate a story and helps stop the proliferation of fake news. Hannah Logue, 14, is a rising freshman at Ephrata High School. She was a captain of both her middle school soccer team and Quiz Bowl teams. She enjoys playing year round soccer with her club team, Penn United Force. Hannah also plays saxophone in the school band. She was the Public Relations officer for the middle school student council, and has been elected as a member-at-large for the high school student council. Hannah also has discovered an enthusiasm for video production, and her group recently won the regional “Outstanding Creativity” award in the statewide What’s So Cool About Manufacturing video contest. She has interests in public speaking and politics as well. She has taken part in the county-wide Oratory Invitational at Cocalico, acted in various plays and musicals at both the middle school and high school levels, and loves to derail her teacher’s lesson plans with debates on current events and other topics, just for the sake of argument. Sometimes, fake news are shared to make us laugh, to get more likes or to hurt someone. It's important to remember that virtual is real, that's why it's essential to be able to tell whether or not news is fake, especially before sharing it. In this educational video, children will be given several tips and advice to learn how to tell the difference between fake and real news, how not to trust exaggerated numbers, how to double-check dates and author's name or be doubtful when they come across expressions like "important" or "you'd never believe that". This video includes examples and encourages children to double-check with the help of an adult if the information is real. It's important to think before sharing something and remember that our actions can make a difference.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice, these were the ingredients chosen to create the perfect little girls but Professor Utonium accidentally added an extra ingredients to the concoction- Chemical X Thus, The Powerpuff Girls were born using their ultra-super powers, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have dedicated their lives to fighting crime and the forces of evil.
The city of Townsville is a beautiful, bustling metropolis, but don’t be fooled! Evil is always afoot. Only Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup — three little girls with extraordinary super powers — can keep the bad guys at bay. The Powerpuff Girls are three super-powered little girls out to save the world. Created by Professor Utonium when he mixed Chemical X with some sugar and spice, the Powerpuff Girls protect the city of Townsville from bad guys and villains like Mojo Jojo, Fuzzy Lumpkins, Him, Princess, the Gangreen Gang and others.
Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are The Powerpuff Girls. They are three little girls with a mission: saving the world before bedtime. The girls live with Professor Utonium in a suburban home outside Townsville where they match wits and muscles with an array or monsters and villains. And together, the Powerpuff Girls save the day! Juggling school, bedtimes and beating up giant monsters may be daunting but together, they prove they are up to the task.
Bubbles is the joy and laughter. She is the innocent, sweetheart that keeps the Powerpuff Girls beating...literally! She is sensitive, artistic, and at times a bit naïve, she can find the good in anyone even if they are a 50 foot-tall fire-breathing monster! But don't underestimate her: she can take down that same monster with one adorable punch.
Blossom is the glue that holds the Powerpuff Girls together! She is courageous, smart, and positive with a strong moral compass. These are just a few of the reasons why Blossom is the leader of the Powerpuff Girls, even if she can be a bit too bossy sometimes! She will never miss an opportunity to kick loose…and kick monster butt!
Buttercup is the girl you don't want to mess with... She is the Powerpuff Girls’ muscle, who marches to the beat of her own giant, rebel drum. A tough, tomboy renegade, she punches first and asks questions later. This occasionally gets her into trouble. Luckily, "trouble" is Buttercup's favourite word!
