There has been an uptick in the number of people converting to Islam recently. This was very noticeable in Ramadan, when it just seemed every day, a young man was becoming Muslim. Imam Ashraf, who leads a congregation in the inner-city London borough of Lewisham, discusses why so many British youngsters are turning to Islam. His Mosque saw over 60 conversions in Ramadan alone. I ask him about the influence of Andrew Tate upon many young men coming to Islam.

Imam Ashraf Dabous is an imam at Lewisham Mosque in London. He studied at the Islamic University of Madinah. He also studied privately under various Shuyukh – studying Hanbali and Hanafi Fiqh and other Sciences. And he recently graduated from Goldsmiths University with an MSc in CBT therapy and is a qualified councillor.

The death toll in Gaza has reached above 10,000, yet the so-called international community, in reality, the Western nations, are deaf to the cries under the rubble. The Israeli war machine no longer worries about redlines as they act in complete impunity. If the hypocrisy of the West was not evident before this crisis, it is clear now that the Liberal World Order was never meant to safeguard the lives and honour of those it deems lesser people.

Amr Abdul Latif was, until recently, a resident and citizen of Gaza. He came to the UK to study for his postgraduate degree at St Andrews University and now works as a software developer. The Western press, even those that show little empathy, present the people of Gaza as lesser human beings who do not have dreams and aspirations. Who are either to be pitied or presented as subhuman. I want to understand what life has been like since 2007, when Israel announced its siege and what the average Gaza actually believes.

Ottoman history and its story has been until recent times the sole endeavour of western orientalists and academics. This has changed, as many more Turkish and Muslim historians have recaptured the narrative through meticulous archival work and retrieval of sources that have recalibrated how we view the last Islamic caliphate.

In this second part of an extended interview with one such Ottoman historian, Dr Yakoob Ahmed from Istanbul University, we take a look at some of the challenges and controversies that are associated with the ulema (scholars) during the latter period of the Ottoman empire. We ask Dr Ahmed to explain why it is said that the ulema were an obstruction to the progress of the Caliphate. We scrutinise the claims that the ulema outlawed the printing press and coffee. I also ask him about the ulema’s role in the deposition of Abdul Hamid II, a revivalist of the caliphate.

We continue the discussion by looking broadly at the latter period of the Ottoman’s right up to the changes brought about by post ottoman secular turkey and how that impacted the ulema.

This week we shall be looking at the situation of the Muslims in China.

Welcome to the first podcast of The Thinking Muslim, follow the show on @thinking_muslim and do remember to subscribe.
For the past few years news about the plight of the Uyghurs in the restive north-western region of Xinjiang, known as East Turkestan, has gradually worsened.

The destruction of Mosques; the use of technology to monitor every movement of the population, the banning of fasting in Ramadan, the introduction of Han Chinese visitors to each home to observe the family unit, the closing of Islamic seminaries have all been documented as the Chinese state attempts to disassociate Islam from the daily practice of ordinary believers. But it is the introduction of camps, what the Chinese government euphuistically calls ‘re-education centres that have focussed minds around the world that nothing less than the annihilation of an entire religious and cultural identity is taking place in full view of the international community.
The Uyghurs have always resisted Chinese rule and their heroism in the face of Chinese imperialism predates 1949 when Chairman Mao brought the Communists to power. The Uyghurs suffered under the repression of the Cultural Revolution, where religion was suppressed.

But in recent years, China’s rapid development has allowed it to acquire sophisticated forms of state control, never seen in the history of authoritarian rule. The state regulates every inch of the lives of its Muslim population, on a scale and ambition that informs us about the type of world China is trying to create.
To try and understand more about the Uyghurs and their struggle, this week I am pleased to have as our guest on the Thinking Muslim Podcast, Arslan Hidayat an Uyghur activist and campaigner currently based in Turkey to talk to us about the extent to which Muslim Uyghurs have been subject to China’s programme of repression.

Arslan has been active for many years, bringing to the world’s attention the situation in East Turkestan, long before it was adopted by the mainstream press. He remains in contact with members of the community and has become a source of information for many. He can be found on Twitter, @arslan_hidayat and I would encourage you all to follow him.

The Ottoman Caliphate was a leading power of its time. Yet as Dr Yakoob Ahmed argued on a previous show, the Muslim ummah is in a current state of collective amnesia about what this polity represented.

Those that do study the Ottomans, sometime rely exclusively on dubious western historical sources, some of which deliberately echo a political narrative that justified European colonialism and the current nation state project that blights the Muslim world.

In this two part show we talk Dr Yakoob about the relationship between the ulema and this empire. Were they mere political apparatchiks, steeped in the power and patronage of powerful sultans? Dr Yakoob paints a vivid picture of the role the ulema played in the 600 years of Ottoman rule, their responsibilities and, contrary to common opinion, he questions the assumption that they were mere instruments of autocratic rulers.

Dr Yakoob is one of the Muslim world’s leading Ottoman historians, he is currently teaching Islamic history at Istanbul University.

Ertugrul, for those of you that haven’t seen it (and I cannot imagine that’s many of you) is a show about the legendary father of Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Sultanate. Very little is known about Ertrugul, except that he paved the way for the nascent Ottoman rule through his heroic commitment to the then Seljuk empire. Since the fall of Baghdad at the hands of Mongolian hoards, the seat of the Abbasid Caliphate, in 1258, the Islamic world was without central leadership, instead falling into several smaller and often competing sultanates. The Ottoman’s, through their rule, not only reunited these disparate sultanates but, through skill and focus, expanded northwards, liberating Constantinople from the cruel Byzantine emperor.

The show’s success in the Muslim world leaves many, especially those with liberal leanings, perplexed. Its recent airing in Pakistan has taken the country by storm. Prime Minister Imran Khan has tweeted about the show, suggesting all young Pakistani’s can gain a sense of lost history and Muslim unity. At the same time, Pakistani liberal elites deride the show, bizarrely highlighting on social media the less than perfect lifestyles of its cast. Saudi Arabia has banned the show, citing its malign influence and Egypt’s “High Fatwa Council” (Dâru’l-İftâ), published a statement that accuses Turkey of trying to create an “area of influence” for itself in the Middle East via its soft power. Saudi Arabia has undertaken a broader initiative to undercut Turkish influence, recently changing its education curriculum to depict the Ottoman rule as an ‘occupation’.

The show, produced by Turkish filmmakers over five high octane seasons, fictionalises the life and travails of Ertrugul, his Kai tribe and its sometimes uneasy relationship with Seljuk officials as they jostle for power but also with Christian Crusaders and Mongolian marauders as they plot to gain dominion over Muslim territories. Some say it is the Muslim answer to Game of Thrones, with it’s choreographed battle scenes and others liken it to an Islamic political drama, with its focus on hypocrisy within and the machinations of power-hungry princes that construct elaborate plans to undermine Muslim unity. In many ways, the show can be a parable for our predicament today, a fractious Muslim world, rife with internal conflict, with a leadership more interested in serving western hegemonic powers than pursuing policies to further Muslim unity and progress.

It is hard to criticise the show. But one cannot divorce its aims from that of the Turkish state, embarked upon a project of soft power. President Erdogan looks to ride the wave of pan-Islamism in the Muslim world, capitalising upon the discontent Arab and Muslim masses have shown with their leaders. Is the show a part of this cultural offensive and if so, has it been utilised for more nefarious political ends?

To discuss the show and its cultural and geopolitical impact we have invited two Muslim commentators that that would look trendy in an Ertugrul hat and have long carried around with them a wooden spoon inside their blazers on the off chance they were invited to a post-lockdown feast.

Our guests this episode come to the show from differing perspectives. Dilly Hussain is the editor of the online independent news platform 5Pillars. Dilly is a fierce advocate for Muslim concerns and is often seen on mainstream TV debating with the 'great and not so good', often swimming against the tide of popular opinion. He is also the co-presenter of the Blood Brothers podcast.

Imran Muneer can only be described as a trailblazer in Muslim podcasting. He began the Mad Mamluks show some years back and is probably the longest standing Muslim podcast to date. Also known by his nom de guerre Sim, he cuts through the complexities of Muslim discourse with his searching style and trademark wit.

When we consider the stance of the West over Israel’s actions these past weeks, many point out the blatant hypocrisy in applying their standards. We are constantly told that human rights are inviolable, that freedom of speech is sacrosanct, and that people have the right to self-determination. Westerners sermonise about how Muslims should embrace democratic norms. They pontificate about the rules-based liberal world order, where rules are applied fairly and equally. Yet, in these past weeks, anyone with a conscience would note that these calls ring hollow. We all can see this hypocrisy. But are the West negligent of their ideals? Are they acting in contrary to their liberal values. It is said if only they were brought to the right path once again.

Imam Tom Facchine argues the West is acting perfectly in line with their worldviews. Imam Tom Facchine finished his BA in Political Science and was granted the opportunity to study at the Islamic University of Madinah from 2015-2020, where he obtained his BA from the Faculty of Shariah. Imam Tom is the Research Director of Islam and Society at the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research. He is also a resident scholar and imam of Utica Masjid (New York state).

If you are interested in learning rational arguments for the truth of Islam directly from Hamza Karamali, you can register for Why Islam is True:
https://www.basiraeducation.or....g/courses/why-islam-

New Atheists such as Richard Dawkins frequently point out that religious believers base their belief in God on natural phenomena that cannot yet be scientifically explained. He remarks to Lawrence Krauss that such reasoning, “a pathetically bad piece of argument”.

Hamza Karamali shows that Richard is right: the intelligent design arguments that Christians make are God-of-the-gaps arguments and they are bad arguments for the existence of God.

He then shows that the traditional Muslim argument for the existence of God (the argument from contingency) is not a God-of-the-gaps argument at all.

In fact, it’s the opposite. One of the features of the argument from contingency is that as our scientific understanding of the universe grows, the argument for God’s existence grows stronger. The reason for this is very simple: a thousand contingent things is a thousand times more of a reason to believe in God than just one contingent thing. And all science does is reveal more and more contingencies in the universe.

Hamza then anticipates the atheist objection that looking at science in this way does away with laws of nature. He explains that the laws of nature don’t go away. They just look different. Instead of being necessary relations between natural causes and effects, they become contingent associations between contingent things that are all upheld by God.

Although this seems counterintuitive, it is, in fact, the rational conclusion of a rational argument. Scientists who imagine that the laws of nature describe necessary and unchangeable relations between natural causes and their effects aren’t employing any argument. They are just following their animal instincts, in the same way that Ivan Pavlov’s dogs followed their animal instincts when they began salivating at the sound of a bell. Watch Hamza describe Pavlov’s famous psychological experiment, classical conditioning, and how it shows that we don’t need to create any gaps at all in our scientific inquiry to prove the existence of God.

Want the slides for the story of Prophet Adam? Download them here: https://thethinkingmuslim.com/....2020/05/02/story-of-

**How This Story Came to Be**

My daughter’s around that age now (3.5 years) where we can start introducing religious conepts. There is nothing good out there for 3-4 year olds to introduce religion to them. Most good stuff is geared towards 7+ years.

So I decided to do my own book for her age using Google Slides. I’ve read enough non-religious books to her for her level to understand how to write one for myself. I know what vocabulary and sentence structures she recognizes. I’m starting with the Story of Adam to introduce Allah as the Creator of everything and connect it to the story of Adam and then us.

The key thing is to turn it into a dialogue so every slide comes with a question that the reader asks the child to remphasize a concept in the discussion before moving to the next slide. I used a book written for older kids as a template. I’m basically dumbing it down for 3-4 year olds. For catchy pictures, I used Google images to find cartoon images related to the discussion in each slide.

I’ve been reading it to my daughter for the past few days and she really likes it! So I guess it is a success alhamdulillah! Now, I am sharing it here for other parents who may be interested as well. A few suggestions before giving you the download link (it’s free!):

I wrote this story with my 3.5 yrs old in mind. Your kid(s) might be at a higher/lower level. You can either run it as a powerpoint presentation directly from the link (preferred) or download it as a pdf and get it printed. If you want to customize it yourself and gear it more towards your own child’s needs, if my version is not doing it for your kid, then you can download it as a powerpoint presentation and just edit it yourself using Microsoft powerpoint. You know your kids better anyone else. Think about how you can retell the story in a way so that your kid(s) will get the themes presented. (If you run it directly from the site, it flips screens which is a cool feature that my kid loves and kind of brings the story to life.)

Under every slide, I have a section called “Question”. This is for you, the parent, to discuss each slide with your kid before moving to the next one. The point of this dialogue is to re-emphasize the message in their mind and make sure they understand the story. Don’t spend too long on it otherwise your kid(s) might get bored and frustrated. Just move them along the story as best you can while having a short dialogue with them about the theme(s) being discussed in every slide.

You don’t have to pose the questions the way I did. You can customize it in whatever way suits your kid(s) needs. Some of this is trial and error. Just try it and if it works, then great, otherwise, try some other way to ask it.

Ideally, I am trying to do this story with my kid at most once a day and at least once a week. My goal is to go over it with her enough times so that she can retell it in her own words. When the picture from any of the slides come up, she should be able to summarize that section for me the best she can at her level. Even if she doesn’t get all of it but she should be able to get the gist of it. This is just my own way to measure how well she is succeeding in understanding the story, you can do your own way.

Finally, please provide me some feedback after and how it went. I’d love to make more resources for parents to bring their kids closer to the deen insha’Allah if this one is received well.

The recent atrocity at al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan underscores the brutality of Israel’s settler colonial project. Our guest this week, Palestinian and Islamic activist Dr Azzam Tamimi gave us a background to the apartheid policies of the state and explained why he believes, ultimately, the severity of Israel’s brutality only serves to express its sheer failure as a project.

Azzam Tamimi is a British Palestinian academic and political activist. He is currently the Chairman of Alhiwar TV Channel and is its Editor in Chief. He is a prolific writer and public speaker.

This Ramadan please consider making a donation, however small, to The Thinking Muslim, to receive a share in the reward and to help us make a greater impact.

We are all angry. We live in an unjust world. The so-called rules-based system, the rhetoric surrounding human rights, the endless speeches on democracy and freedom – all of it turned out to be hollow. The death and destruction in gaza is juxtaposed with the triviality with which the political elites in the west talk of human life. We are angry.
How does a Muslim deal with this visceral anger. How do we deal with the inhumanity of these western elites yet stay true to ourselves and who we are? Should we learn to stop being angry and live our lives in a comatose state or utilise this anger in a just direction?

Today we have Dr Kamal Abu Zahra to help us understand anger from an Islamic perspective.
My guest today is Dr Kamal Abu Zahra is a lecturer in Islamic studies and in Islamic law who has an expertise in the contemporary fiqh.
