President-elect Donald Trump refused to take a question from CNN reporter Jim Acosta, calling him fake news.
Dive into the phenomenon known as circular reporting and how it contributes to the spread of false news and misinformation.
--
In previous decades, most news with global reach came from several major newspapers and networks with the resources to gather information directly.

Filippo Menczer and other data scientists at Indiana University’s Observatory on Social Media (OSoMe) are building tools that allow researchers to track the spread of information -- and misinformation -- across online social networks. One common factor that helps fake news go viral is automated "bots" that overwhelm posts by real people. So think before you click.

With an ever growing number of people getting their news online, being able to work out what’s true - and what’s not - has never been more important. In a world of digital disinformation, one country is often held up as the benchmark for having a media literate population. Finland has topped the Media Literacy Index for the 7 years the ranking system has been in existence. As we mark World News Day, John Bevir reports from Helsinki, on how the country is trying to fight fake news.
Sky News host Chris Kenny questions when the ABC will “correct and explain” its own inconsistencies with news reporting.
“Kim Williams spoke at great length about fake news, quoting George Orwell and lamenting how it is so difficult in the digital age to find trusted, objective, factual information,” Mr Kenny said.
“If you want to counter it and you run a major broadcasting behemoth replete with government funding and statutory obligations, well, you have got a chance to do something about it, I mean when will the ABC correct and explain and apologise for its own fake news in trying to set up Heston Russell as a war criminal?”
