الشيخ الإمام زين الدين الآمديّ عاش في بغداد، وأخذ العلم في مجالس شيوخها وبرع في علوم العربية، وأتقن اللغة الفارسية والتركية والرومية والمغولية، وكان وراقاً اشتغل بتجارة الكتب مع فقدانه البصر مذ كان صغيراً.
احترف التجارة بالكتب وجمع كثيرا منها.. رغم أنه أعمى.. فأبدع طريقة استخدم فيها الورق وتشكليه بطريقة نافرة لقراءة الاسم والسعر ومن هنا انطلقت فكرة الحروف النافرة للمكفوفين، بهذه الطريقة.. الآمدي هو المبتكر الأول للحروف النافرة أو البارزة التي يقرأ بها العميان وهي المعروفة الآن بطريقة بريل.

في مطلع عام 1913 تخلفت البلدية دمشق عن دفع مبلغ قدره 12 ألف جنيه عثمانيّ لشركة الكهرباء، فقامت الشركة بقطع شبكة الإنارة في الشوارع، فبادرت البلديّة في المقابل إلى تنظيم حملة مقاطعة للكهرباء وترامواي دمشق.
بعد مفاوضات بين الشركة والبلدية عادت الأنوار لشوارع دمشق، لكنّ المناوشات بين البلديّة والشركة استمرّت خلال فترة الحرب العالميّة الأولى، في عام 1917، قطعت شركة الكهرباء التيّار الكهربائيّ عن دمشق حتّى نهاية الحرب.
