Die Waldorfpädagogik basiert auf dem Anthroposophischen Ansatz von Rudolf Steiner. Rudolf Steiner gründete 1919 in Stuttgart die erste Waldorf-Schule, um die Kinder der Fabrikarbeiter der Waldorf Astoria Zigaretten Fabrik zu lehren - daher der Name. Alle Kinder, unabhängig von sozialem Status oder Talent, erhielten den gleichen Unterricht, was die Schule zu einem Pionier der sozialen Gerechtigkeit im Bildungswesen machte.

Ziel einer Waldorfpädagogik ist es, freie, aber moralisch verantwortungsbewusste Menschen hervorzubringen, die über ein hohes Maß an sozialer Kompetenz und kreativen Fähigkeiten verfügen. Faktenwissen, Hausaufgaben und Testergebnisse haben weniger Gewichtung. Geschichtenerzählen und Experimentieren sind die Hauptlehrmethode. Lehrbücher werden vermieden.

Während des zwölfjährigen Lehrplans lernen die Schüler Mathematik, Literatur, Geschichte und Naturwissenschaften. Sowie eine Vielzahl von Künsten und praktischen Fertigkeiten. Grundschüler malen, stricken, weben und formen mit Wachs. Ältere stellen Muster, Bücher, Töpferwaren und Stein-Skulpturen her. Jeder lernt Musik zu machen. Zuerst spielen alle Flöte, dann spielen einige Streichinstrumente und andere schließen sich dem Chor an.

Die Schüler spielen kollaborative Spiele und lernen Eurythmie zu tanzen. Sie betreiben biologischen Landbau und lernen zwei Fremdsprachen, die in den ersten Jahren durch Lieder, Geschichten und Gespräche unterrichtet werden. In den Klassen 8 und 12 entwickelt die gesamte Klasse ein klassisches Drama, das sie dann vor ihren Eltern und Freunden aufführen.

Besonders hervorzuheben ist der projektbezogene Ansatz für fast alle akademischen Hauptfächer. Anstelle von sich wiederholenden Stundenplänen dominiert ein bestimmtes Fach wie Geschichte, Mathematik, Naturwissenschaften oder sogar Gartenarbeit die ersten zwei Stunden am Morgen für einen Zeitraum von 4 bis 6 Wochen. Nach dieser Zeit widmet man sich einem Neuen Thema.

Steiner erfand auch einen experimentellen Ansatz für die Wissenschaft, bei dem die Schüler wissenschaftliche Konzepte in ihren eigenen Worten und Zeichnungen beobachten und später beschreiben. Anstatt den Konzepten das erste mal in einem Lehrbuch zu begegnen. Die Waldorfschulen betrachten Computer daher als erste Hilfe für Kinder im Teenageralter, nachdem sie grundlegende, bewährte Methoden zur Entdeckung von Informationen und zum Lernen erlernt haben.


Im Geiste der Zusammenarbeit ohne Wettbewerb wenden sich die Lehrer an die gesamte Klasse und nicht an Einzelpersonen oder Gruppen. Die Lehrer beurteilen die individuelle Entwicklung des Schülers. Ab der 7. Klasse werden langsam Noten eingeführt, um die Schüler auf die Aufnahmeprüfungen für die weiterführenden Schulen vorzubereiten. Hyperaktive, wettbewerbsorientierte oder sehr extrovertierte Kinder können diese sanfte Herangehensweise als schwierig empfinden und in Schulen mit strikteren Lernplänen möglicherweise bessere Fortschritte erzielen.

Heute gibt es über tausend Waldorfschulen in 60 Ländern. Was sie zu einer der größten unabhängigen Schulbewegungen macht. In Europa ist die Methode zu einer anerkannten Pädagogik geworden und Waldorfschulen werden bisweilen auch staatlich gefördert.
In Deutschland und vielen anderen Ländern kann man reguläre Schulabschlüsse erwerben.

Zu berühmten Waldorf**eltern** zählen Clint Eastwood, Lenny Kravitz und die Familie Forbes. Trotz Steiners kritischer Sicht auf Technologie und Massenmedien sind Steiner-Schulen bei Eltern aus dem Technologiebereich beliebt. Als Steve Jobs einmal von einem Technikjournalisten gefragt wurde, ob seine Kinder das neue iPad mögen, antwortete er, dass sie es nicht benutzt hätten, und fuhr fort: "Wir beschränken, wie viel Technologie unsere Kinder zu Hause verwenden."

Der anerkannte Psychiater William Glasser sagte, dass wir 10% von dem lernen, was wir lesen, – 20% von dem, was wir hören, – 30% von dem, was wir sehen, aber 80% von dem, was wir erleben. Wenn wir Herrn Glasser glauben, könnte man daraus folgern, dass die experimentelle Lernmethode der Waldorfpädagogik trotz ihres Low-Tech-Ansatzes außergewöhnlich zeitgemäß ist.
