Ahmed Salim introduces “1001 Inventions: Journeys from Alchemy to Chemistry” as a new public engagement with science initiative produced by 1001 Inventions in partnership with UNESCO to celebrate the United Nations proclaimed International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT2019).

Through a short animation video narrated by Professor Jim Al-Khalili, renowned scientist, author and broadcaster, immersive on-stage experiments weaved in a theatrical performance as well as exciting hands-on workshops and educational resources children are introduced to the fascinating journey from alchemy to chemistry, across ages, by lesser-known pioneers from ancient cultures and civilisations that still influence our world today.

This first-of-its-kind initiative helps young people improve their understanding of chemistry and its numerous uses. It brings to life stories from the history of science by remarkable men and women from different backgrounds and cultures with a focus on the remarkable work of the pioneering polymath Jabir ibn Hayyan, also known as Geber, in the 8th century.

The initiative launched at UNESCO headquarters in Paris in January 2019 now rolls out on a global tour in partnership with museums, science centres, festivals, schools, universities and libraries engaging young people around the world to raise awareness of the importance of chemistry and its applications, inspire a future generation of scientists while promoting diversity and intercultural appreciation.

Celebrate IYPT2019 and bring “1001 Inventions: Journeys from Alchemy to Chemistry” to your venues and events to offer audiences a wondrous journey full of fun and learning through a range of engaging science and cultural experiences.

The United Nations estimate that more than 8 million tons of plastics flow into the oceans each year. A new chemical conversion process could transform the world’s polyolefin waste, a form of plastic, into useful products, such as clean fuels and other items.

“Our strategy is to create a driving force for recycling by converting polyolefin waste into a wide range of valuable products, including polymers, naphtha (a mixture of hydrocarbons), or clean fuels,” said Linda Wang, the Maxine Spencer Nichols Professor in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, leads the research team developing this technology, along with research associates Kai Jin, a graduate student, and Wan-Ting (Grace) Chen, a postdoctoral researcher.

This week Reactions takes a look at history of science and the many major discoveries that came accidentally. Sometimes they came from recognizing potential in an unexpected product or waste. Other times, discovery came out of pure desperation from a seemingly dead-end experiment. Here are some of those happy accidents that ended up changing the world.

Why does shaken soda explode? Does ice melt first in fresh or salt water?
Thank you Squarespace for sponsoring this video. Go to https://squarespace.com to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code: VERITASIUM

This video features experiments that have been shown to me by science teachers over the years. Does ice melt fast in salt water or fresh water was an experiment introduced to me at the Utah Science Teachers' conference. The ring of metal over a chain demo came from a teachers event in Florida. The idea shaking a carbonated drink increases pressure came from an email.

Special thanks to Petr Lebedev for building the pressure gauge.

How the Big Bang gave us time, explained by theoretical physicist Sean Carroll.

Up next, The Universe in 90 minutes: Time, free will, God, & more ► https://youtu.be/tM4sLmt1Ui8

In this Big Think interview, theoretical physicist Sean Carroll discusses the concept of time and the mysteries surrounding its properties. He notes that while we use the word "time" frequently in everyday language, the real puzzles arise when we consider the properties of time, such as the past, present, and future, and the fact that we can affect the future but not the past.

Carroll also discusses the concept of entropy, which is a measure of how disorganized or random a system is, and the second law of thermodynamics, which states that there is a natural tendency for things in the universe to go from a state of low entropy to high entropy. He explains that the arrow of time, or the perceived difference between the past and the future, arises due to the influence of the Big Bang and the fact that the universe began in a state of low entropy.

Carroll also touches on the possibility of time travel and the concept of the multiverse.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About Sean Carroll:
Dr. Sean Carroll is Homewood Professor of Natural Philosophy — in effect, a joint appointment between physics and philosophy — at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and fractal faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. Most of his career has been spent doing research on cosmology, field theory, and gravitation, looking at topics such as dark matter and dark energy, modified gravity, topological defects, extra dimensions, and violations of fundamental symmetries. These days, his focus has shifted to more foundational questions, both in quantum mechanics (origin of probability, emergence of space and time) and statistical mechanics (entropy and the arrow of time, emergence and causation, dynamics of complexity), bringing a more philosophical dimension to his work.
