Learning Objective: Evaluate the number of valence electrons and core electrons from the electron configurations.

In this example problem, we show how to fill a molecular orbital diagram for a diatomic molecule and use molecular bond theory to compare bond order, bond strength, and magnetic properties (paramagnetic or diamagnetic).

Use molecular orbital theory to determine:
a.) the bond order of N2
b.) whether N2 is paramagnetic or diamagnetic
c.) order of increasing bond strength for N2, N22-, N2+
